The Best Interior Design Advice
When I was younger I collected quotations. I loved them. I loved the simplicity of stating a well thought out truth in minimal words. I loved how much I could gather about a person based upon the profundity of these words and how often they would sum up feelings I couldn’t express otherwise. They were little “a ha!” moments on paper that I was privy to experience; a collection of wisdom without ego passed down merely to benefit whoever might come across them.
Fast forward decades later and I still love quotations. A few years ago on Twitter I started posting my favorite interior design quotes. It was mostly for me as a reminder of my childhood collection of words. It was also a reminder for me to stay focused on the basics of interior design, especially as trends on social media seemed to be stuck on repetition.
As I’ve collected these quotations, they’ve become wonderful gems of advice and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.”
~ Juan Montoya
“Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”
~Frank Lloyd Wright
“Minimalism is designing to allow the art, the books, the view, the people—whatever matters most to the inhabitant—to be the soul of the space.”
~Deborah Berke, architect
“There are two things that make a room timeless: a sense of history and a piece of the future.”
“Interior design is a business of trust.”
“Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.”
