Pretty Up Your Party: Last Minute Decorating Ideas to Make Your Holiday Party Shine

Even though you’ve already decked your halls for the holiday season, take your party decor above and beyond with these fun, quick ideas.

More is more

While I usually adhere to the ‘less is more’ philosophy when it comes to color, glitz, and accessories, I’m all for piling it on from now until New Year’s – especially if you’re planning to entertain.

Whether you’re hosting a hot chocolate and cookies party for neighborhood families, a formal holiday dinner party for business associates, or just a fun get-together for cocktails and appetizers with close friends, go over the top with your decor.

That even means doing something quirky and different, which is good news for last minute decorating since you can use what you already have. Break out those boldly patterned dishes and serving ware. They don’t have to match as long as they’re fun and colorful!

Add a touch of the unexpected

Surprise your guests upon arrival with something to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ over as they stash their coats and handbags by adding an extra special holiday tree by the coat closet or in the extra bedroom you’ll use for this.

You can coordinate the tree’s ornaments with the room’s color palette, or cheekily mark the impromptu ‘coat check’ location by adorning a tree with lovely scarves, hats, and gloves.

Or add lush wreaths (fresh or faux) over the powder room mirror, on kitchen cabinet doors, etc.

Find decorating direction with a theme

If you’re not sure how to make your decor extra special, find tracks to run on by choosing a decorating theme.

Right now, the stores are still filled with trendy items you can use as themes in and of themselves like buffalo check plaids, bottlebrush trees, or mercury glass. Or you can put together your own theme, like ‘coastal/beachy Christmas’ or ‘woodland holiday.

Whatever theme you choose, the key is to go all-in. Introduce it before your guests even enter the house by decking the mailbox and front door in the theme, then carry it through any and all rooms your guests will see. Lay it on extra thick in the living room, kitchen, or wherever the main gathering spot will be.

Prep-ahead pretty

A day or two before the party, you can take care of those little decorative touches that will make all the difference for setting a festive tone.

  • Bundle napkins and silverware for the buffet table in pretty napkin rings (I love anything that looks like bold, fashionable jewelry!)
  • Set the dining table and the buffet table, if applicable. Include candles and serving utensils.
  • Plan where you want to place fresh flowers and select the vases. That way, all you have to do the day of the party is grab a few bouquets and distribute them around the house. Don’t forget the kitchen and the powder room!
  • Place candles everywhere because there’s nothing like candlelight to make any space feel festive.
  • Bowls and baskets filled with ornaments always work in a pinch to add a lovely touch.

Now you’re all set to throw together an extra special home for your party guests!
